Best Citronella Torches for Backyard Ambiance (2026)

Updated March 2026 · By Porch & Fire

Citronella torches do double duty — they add warm flickering light to your backyard and help keep mosquitoes at a distance. They are not a perfect bug solution on their own, but combined with other repellents, they make evenings outside noticeably more comfortable.

We looked at classic tiki torches, tabletop options, and modern metal designs to find the best combination of ambiance, burn time, and actual bug-repelling effectiveness.

Do Citronella Torches Actually Work?

Citronella does repel mosquitoes, but only within a few feet of the flame. A single torch will not protect a whole patio. The strategy is to use multiple torches around the perimeter of your seating area to create an overlapping zone of protection. For the best results, combine torches with a Thermacell on the table and permethrin on your cushions.
